Update: April 2026

This month has been as busy as it tends to be. In addition to projects not related to puzzles, I've also been working more consistently on making a pack and designing for something larger. I've stopped working on the solver because it feels a bit disenchanting to approach logic puzzles without looking for the underlying logic. I've also put the patchworks to rest again but made a bit of progress in the fan project that I put on hiatus a while ago. Additionally, I've been daydreaming of a sort of digital puzzle book with rule deduction where the central mechanic involves dominoes, but since it would likely be fully illustrated, I don't think I could complete it this year even if I prioritized it heavily.  A few days ago, I noticed that a bad actor was squatting on a previously expired domain I was linking to. I sincerely apologize if anyone was led there because of my negligence. I've removed links where unnecessary and retracted posts where important. At least ...

Puzzletober 2025: Sweep

Image
Now that the paint has been sorted, the newcomer finally finds time to study the details of the room. The walls are an uncommon lavender. Various pictures are hung on the left wall. Crowding the base of the wardrobe are a broom, a dustpan, a vase of roses, a tainted bucket of water, a hammer, nails,  spackle, a trowel,  detergent, bars of soap, dish soap, glue, and towels of various sizes. Neatly hung in its center is the traditional outfit. The innkeeper says, "Miss Vitale is out today on paid leave. She said there was a family emergency with distant relatives. I'm holding her key until she returns. I would have liked to have my room cleaned today." Some of the patrons had not left the hallway. "Say, would you mind helping me with that? I heard you say you're a journalist and I know you're keen to see as much as you can while you're here. Besides, it gives you an alibi for spending time with me." The newcomer agrees and grabs the broom from the ward...

Deducible Teeth

Teeth was created by thejonymyster for 1D1P. It's a variant minesweeper that incorporates rule deduction for its clues. Because it allows exporting board seeds and has a clue type that doesn't require digging anything to reveal, it's possible for a board to be completely solvable without guessing, which isn't usually guaranteed. I've collected all the deducible board links I've openly shared and copied them here. You can start playing without a seed at  https://thejonymyster.neocities.org/Teeth  to learn the rules first. I Am My Own Cipher

Image
made on 5/10/24, while pondering the possibilities of 14 Minesweeper Variants 2 Suppose an n-by-n minesweeper board is notated such that each row corresponds to a number from 1 to n increasing downward and each column corresponds to a letter from A to the nth letter increasing rightward. There are n mines: one in each row and column. Each column contains its letter at least once as a cipher clue: every letter corresponds to a different number from 1 to n based on the notations for the positions of each mine (e.g. a mine at E4 would imply E=4). The top-left square is safe. How should the board be solved?

I enjoyed the new variants in the demo and am excited to see what the full version has in store. [2G]5x5-8

#452: Duck Chess Minesweeper

Image
made on 11/18/23 Place ducks in the board so numbers represent the amount of legal moves each piece would have if it were their turn. Ducks cannot be captured and prevent pieces from moving past them, although knights can jump over them. The amount of ducks is in the top-right. The board is from white's perspective.  (You do not necessarily need to draw ducks; the term is borrowed from duck chess.) This puzzle was inspired by a chess minesweeper concept by aadenboy.  I wanted to set up the puzzle in a way that wouldn't require any guessing. Also, this is probably one of the most chess positions of all time.

#396: Number Adjacencies

Image
made on 6/13/23 Based on a puzzle type by Jawa Place numbers into the grid such that every number reveals the amount of numbers it's next to (minesweeper-style). There must be two numbers in every row and column.

#393: The French are Invading France with Clones

made on 6/7/23 https://tinyurl.com/2o8lj9oy Variant: Letters represent cloned people. Clones with the same letter have the same shading and the same number.

#392: CBA Minesweeper

Image
made on 6/6/23 CBA (10 mines) Rules for if you don't have 14 Minesweeper Variants: [C] Connected: all mines are connected to each other. diagonal connections are allowed. [B] Balance: every row and column has the same number of mines. [A] Antiknight: no two mines are a knight's move apart.

#387: Nonogram Minesweeper Metapuzzle

Image
made on 6/4/23 Find a solution which solves this as both a nonogram and a minesweeper. The ? numbers must be the same for both puzzles. (The topleft corner cannot be shaded, and clues cannot be 0, both from the conventions of nonograms.) This puzzle also works if a 2 is given instead of a 1. Also, this is provably the largest grid size for which this puzzle works if every row and column is clued.

#386: The French are Invading France

made on 5/31/23 This puzzle type was invented by Jawa. Every square is either shaded (French) or unshaded (not French). Numbers reveal the amount of cells surrounding it (minesweeper style) that have the same shading. (For uniqueness, the bottom-right corner is not French.) https://tinyurl.com/mrx8f9v4

#326: Minesweeper as a Paper Puzzle

made on New Years Day 2023 https://tinyurl.com/2mj7h3tl The corner number is the total mine count. Clues don't matter if they're on mines. You don't need to make any deductions involving clues you don't know are safe, so you can treat it like normal minesweeper. Alternate coloring if the ? are distracting you: https://tinyurl.com/2p3z23t6

#194: Nurikabe Minesweeper Dual

made on 6/15/22 https://puzz.link/p?nurikabe/v:/9/9/g4i3h.p.w.k4w.p.h3i.g Solve the nurikabe such that the numbers also solve a minesweeper. Question marks must stand for the same number in both puzzles. I really like how this looks but it feels bifurcation-heavy.
